Ordering a LOT more take-out recently? 🥡 The three-dimensional plastic clamshells and tubs used for take-out (and berries 🍓) CAN be placed in your recycling cart. Here in the PNW, we are lucky to have robust recycling programs that can accept more plastic items than others. However, make sure you eat all the contents and that the plastic containers are empty, clean and dry before you toss them in with the rest of your recycling.

Did you know that #compost can help fight climate change? Compost application can increase soil organic matter, which draws down carbon from the atmosphere and sequesters it in the soil. Recology recently teamed up with ranchers, Steve and Marcus Kistler to apply compost on their rangeland in Oakdale, California. The California Department of Food and Agriculture's Healthy Soils Program provided grant funding to support this research on carbon sequestration. Learn more about this project by watching the video below!

When you place items in your recycling cart, it’s imperative to do three things: 1️ Only place items in your cart that you know to be recyclable: paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and metal cans, and plastic bottles, tubs, and jugs. 2️ Place all materials loose in your cart, without a plastic liner. Plastic bags and wrap are problematic materials at recycling facilities. 3️ Make sure items are empty clean and dry. Why is this so important? This is to protect the paper and cardboard that make up the bulk of what is recycled. Food or liquid on paper materials will cause those materials to mold or rot which makes them unsuitable for recycling.

Shelter-in-place orders have sparked big increases in online orders for home delivery. That’s created more demand for cardboard shipping boxes. When you recycle, your materials enter the supply chain by sending important materials back to box-making manufacturers. So how can you continue to #recycleright? 1. Keep recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass containers. 2. Break down cardboard boxes to save room in your blue recycling bin. 3. Empty soda cans and shake out food containers to keep liquids and food out of the blue bin and preserve paper quality. 4. Do not bag recyclables. Place them loose and clean in your recycling bin.
