Through an effective three bin sorting system (recycle, compost and landfill), container signs, and employee training, we were able to make great strides in reducing out waste. Small changes from every employee had a huge impact and led to a successful summer, as well as a great future for continued waste reduction.” A big thank you and shout out to #ImpossibleFoods for their dedication to sustainability. #WasteZeroAllStar #WasteZeroWednesday #BetterAtTheBin #RedwoodCity

You all wonder why it is so hard to get people to recycle? Because every time you go over to drop bottles and cans off at the recycling center on Davis something has changed. Today I went there and now every spot is handicapped in front of the drop off point and you have to walk around the side of the building with a bunch of trash cans and tubs. Brilliant idea, not sure who was the brain child that thought that up, but good on you. I am actually 100% disabled but was driving my truck so I could get all the bottles and cans to the center at one time. Me taking cans and bottles to the center isn't or should I say wasn't about money, it was about not putting more waste into the landfill and recycling our resources. Done, I will simply from now on throw them in the trash like everyone else, save my time, my effort and I don't have to have bags and bags of cans and bottles taking up room on the side of my house until I have enough to drive to the other side of town.

Get the whole family involved in this great eco-friendly Halloween activity! Draw ghostly faces on milk jugs with a marker. Cut out a small hole (kid-safe scissors or adults only please!) so they can be lit up. You can line them up and use a string of lights stuffing a few bulbs in each, or give every ghost their own battery operated tea light. Your creations can be stationed along a walkway or strung across your porch or trees through the handles. Tip: Leaving the caps on while you draw and cut makes the jugs stronger and easier to work with. Remember to recycle the milk jugs after Halloween or save them and reuse them next year. #Reuse

This year has been rewarding for CleanScapes in more ways than one. Last year was a great year, but the nonstop rain forced us to reschedule more than one clean-up event. This year, we hit the ground running in March and have been busy ever since -- holding more than five events in just six months. We forged new and built on existing partnerships; saw one of our very own longtime volunteers, Don Lysle, be honored by Keep PA Beautiful as Volunteer of the Year; and most recently were humbled to receive word that CleanScapes itself is going to be recognized in November. CleanScapes will be receiving the Champion of the PA Wilds Conservation Stewardship Award during the PA Wilds Annual Dinner & Awards on November 7. This is a huge honor that brings regional attention to our work, as the Pennsylvania Wilds spans 13 counties. The Conservation Stewardship Award "honors the best practices and achievements of an individual, business or organization that demonstrates a commitment to conservation and outstanding resource stewardship of the natural and cultural assets in the Pennsylvania Wilds." There are 10 different award categories, nine of which receive nominations from the public. Special thank you to Joanne Heimer and Steve Getz who took the time to nominate CleanScapes for this award.  And thank you to the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, Inc. for recognizing the value of CleanScapes and the committed volunteers who make our organization's work -- and this award -- possible. See you in the Wilds, Elisabeth — — — This column was written by Elisabeth Lynch McCoy, Clinton County CleanScapes  Project Director.

Keeping food and liquids out of your recycling is a crucial step to #RecycleRight! Manufacturers using recycled materials to make new products will reject loads that smell like mold or rot. But proper preparation is quick and easy: 1. Empty any residual food or liquid from the container 2. Clean the container with a quick rinse or scrape 3. Tap twice to shake off excess moisture before tossing in your recycling cart.

We were recently humbled to receive word that CleanScapes will be receiving the Champion of The PA Wilds Conservation Stewardship Award during the PA Wilds Annual Dinner & Awards on November 7. This is a huge honor that brings regional attention to our work, as the Pennsylvania Wilds spans 13 counties. 🌿 Thank you to those who nominated us for this prestigious award, and thank you to the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship for recognizing the value of CleanScapes and the committed volunteers who make our organization's work -- and this award -- possible.
