Thank you @bourdeap for sharing your story with us! Do you a story about life with T1D that you can share with us to help raise awareness? Tag us @loveandsugar.t1d I was 8 years old, and suddenly I was eating like an NFL lineman, but losing weight and going to the washroom continuously. Something was wrong. I remember it was a Tuesday night, after steak and potatoes I had a May West, and my mother asked me if I wanted another one. I should have suspected something was up, she never offered a second May West. That night my life changed forever, Type 1 Diabetes got me. No one knows how or why. At 8 years old all you care about is going back to play with your friends so I didn’t think about the ‘consequences’ at that time. One insulin injection per day, a strict diet and off you go. When I was first diagnosed, multiple injections per day, glucometers or insulin pumps did not exist. No sir, back in my day, we took one injection in the morning (meaning that we ate at a fixed time and fixed amount), checked our sugar levels in a pee cup (meaning the results were off by 2 hours). It has been 47 years since my diagnosis. I have given myself at least 75,000 insulin injections and pricked my fingers for glucose tests over 100,000 times. But things have gotten easier. From the size of the needles, the invention and refinement of glucometers, insulin pumps and CGMs that reduce and soon hopefully eliminate the need to prick your fingers, #t1d is much easier to manage. I started using the Libre a couple of weeks ago and so far I am happy with the ease of use, I look forward to better communication between various diabetes devices and for technology to continue to make management easier. These improvements are all thanks to research and funding from organizations like the #JDRF. There is still a lot to be done for a cure though and events like #loveandsugar2018 help make progress towards that goal. I should have had a third May West that night, while I still had the chance... one day soon I hope..
