Summary of today's Rio Tinto China media

People's Daily Online English reported that Mike Henry, CEO of BHP, predicted that the U.S.-staged trade war will harm the global economy, but China will be the key to avoiding a global economic downturn. Despite the limited direct impact of U.S. tariffs on the BHP, the implication of slower economic growth and a fragmented trading environment could be more significant, Henry said in the company's operational review for the nine months ended March 31, 2025, which was published on April 17. "China's ability to shift toward a consumption-led economy and for trade flows to adapt to the new environment will be key to sustaining the global outlook," he said.

Bloomberg reported that China's alumina exports reached their second-highest level ever in March, with 300,000 tons shipped overseas, more than double the amount from a year earlier. The main destinations for China's alumina exports are Russia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates, with Russia accounting for 48% of the exports.

Financial Times reported that China’s latest export controls on rare earth minerals could cause shutdowns in automotive production, with stockpiles of essential magnets set to run out within months if Beijing fully chokes off exports. Beijing expanded its export restrictions to seven rare earth elements and magnets vital for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and fighter jets in early April in retaliation for US President Donald Trump's steep tariffs of 145 per cent on China.
